Wall of Eyes

Wall of Eyes by The Smile was released on 26 January 2024, and it’s the band’s second studio album, following up their intriguing debut A Light for Attracting Attention from 2022. The Smile is a trio made up of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, along with drummer Tom Skinner, and on this record they continue to explore their own territory while keeping that creative spark very much alive.

The sound here feels adventurous but surprisingly cohesive. There’s the art-rock and experimental edge you might expect from Yorke and Greenwood, but Wall of Eyes leans into atmospheric layers, interesting rhythms, and moments of quiet intensity that give it a slightly different vibe to your typical alternative rock album. You’ll hear everything from gentle, almost introspective passages to dynamic bursts of energy, with some lush string arrangements adding depth here and there.

Standout moments like the title track and “Friend of a Friend” show how the band balances melodic warmth with a bit of unease, while longer pieces such as “Bending Hectic” let the trio stretch out and play with mood and texture. The melodies aren’t always straightforward, but they have a way of sinking in over time and rewarding repeat listens.

What keeps Wall of Eyes interesting months after its release is how it grows on you. It’s rich without being overwhelming, thoughtful without feeling distant, and always keeps a bit of mystery in its pocket. Whether you’re into immersive listening sessions or just want something that sticks with you, this album has a lot to offer and rewards coming back to it.
